Can a company change my job role or location without my consent?

Asked by Anonymous · Answered 03 Feb 2026

The Question
My employer wants to transfer me to a different city and change my role significantly, without really asking for my input. Can they do this unilaterally?

This largely depends on the terms of your employment contract — many contracts include a general clause allowing the employer to transfer or reassign employees to different locations or roles as business needs require, in which case the employer generally does have this contractual right, subject to it being exercised reasonably and in good faith rather than as a punitive or discriminatory measure.

If your contract doesn't contain such a clause, or the proposed change is so fundamental that it effectively amounts to a different job altogether, you may have stronger grounds to object, and in extreme cases, refusing an unreasonable, contractually unsupported transfer that's effectively forcing you out could potentially support a constructive dismissal claim.

It's worth reviewing your specific appointment letter and any applicable HR policy on transfers before deciding how to respond, and to raise your concerns formally and in writing with your employer in the meantime. An employment lawyer can help assess whether the specific transfer being proposed is one your employer is genuinely entitled to make.
