Domestic Violence Law

Can my in-laws be held responsible if my husband commits domestic violence?

Asked by Anonymous · Answered 15 Feb 2026

The Question
My husband has been abusive, and while my in-laws haven't directly hit me, they have supported and encouraged his behaviour and sometimes verbally abused me too. Can they also be held liable?

Yes — domestic violence law isn't limited to just the husband. It applies broadly to any person in a domestic relationship with you, which includes relatives of the husband living in a joint household, and covers not just physical abuse but verbal, emotional, and economic abuse as well.

If your in-laws have themselves engaged in abusive conduct, or in some circumstances facilitated or supported abuse against you, they can be named as respondents in a domestic violence complaint, and the court can pass orders against them too, including protection orders restraining them from further abuse or harassment.

It helps to document specific instances — dates, what was said or done, and any witnesses — involving your in-laws specifically, rather than only describing your husband's conduct, since the complaint needs to clearly establish each respondent's individual role. An advocate handling your case can help you properly frame the complaint to include all responsible parties.
