The Question
I received a legal notice from someone claiming I owe them money, but I don't believe the claim is accurate. How should I respond?

It's important not to simply ignore a legal notice, even if you believe the claim is unfounded — a considered, timely reply, ideally drafted with the help of a lawyer, puts your position on record and can sometimes prevent the matter from escalating to litigation.

Your reply should clearly and specifically address each point raised in the notice — stating what you agree with (if anything), what you dispute, and why, along with any supporting facts or documents on your side.

If the claim genuinely has no basis, a well-drafted response explaining this can sometimes end the matter there. If the sender proceeds to file a case regardless, your reply notice, along with the position you've taken, will typically form part of the record the court considers. Given how a poorly drafted response could inadvertently harm your position later, it's worth having a lawyer review the notice and help prepare your reply.
