Dowry Death
The death of a woman within seven years of marriage, under suspicious circumstances connected to dowry-related cruelty or harassment.
Where a married woman dies within seven years of marriage otherwise than under normal circumstances, and it is shown that she was subjected to cruelty or harassment for dowry shortly before her death, the law presumes it to be a dowry death, shifting a significant evidentiary burden onto the accused.
Such cases are treated with particular seriousness given the presumption involved, and typically proceed alongside charges of cruelty and, where applicable, abetment of suicide.
