Assignment (Contract)
The transfer of rights (and sometimes obligations) under a contract from one party to another, without necessarily requiring the other original party's consent.
Contractual rights, such as the right to receive payment, can generally be assigned to a third party, though obligations typically cannot be assigned without the other party's consent, since they didn't agree to have someone else perform in the original party's place.
Many commercial contracts specifically address whether and how assignment is permitted, given how significantly it can affect the parties' original bargain.
