Consideration (Contract Law)
Something of value — money, a promise, or an act — that each party to a contract gives or agrees to give in exchange for the other party's promise.
Consideration is one of the essential elements for a valid, enforceable contract — a bare promise, without something given or promised in return, is generally not enforceable, with certain narrow, specifically recognised exceptions (such as a promise made out of natural love and affection, if properly documented).
Consideration doesn't need to be adequate or equal in value, only real — courts generally don't second-guess whether parties struck a "fair" bargain, only whether genuine consideration existed.
