Hacking / Unauthorised Access

The offence of accessing a computer, computer system, or network without the owner's permission, or exceeding authorised access.

This covers a wide range of conduct — from breaking into an email account to accessing a company's servers without authorisation — and can attract both civil liability (compensation to the affected party) and criminal prosecution under the IT Act.

Even accessing data one is not authorised to view, despite having some legitimate access to the system otherwise, can amount to unauthorised access under the law.
