Identity Theft (Cyber)
Fraudulently using another person's identifying information — such as their name, password, or bank details — to commit fraud or gain an unauthorised benefit.
Identity theft in the digital context often involves stealing personal or financial credentials to make unauthorised transactions or impersonate the victim online, and is specifically criminalised under the IT Act in addition to any related cheating or fraud charges.
Victims are generally advised to promptly change compromised credentials, alert their bank, and file a police/cyber cell complaint to help limit further misuse.
