Informed Consent (Medical)

Doctors are generally required to explain the material risks of a procedure in a way the patient can reasonably understand, before obtaining consent — performing a procedure without valid informed consent can itself expose the practitioner to liability, even if the procedure was performed skilfully.

What counts as adequate disclosure can depend on the nature of the procedure and the risks a reasonable patient would want to know about before deciding.
