Khata / Property Tax Record
A municipal or revenue record identifying a property for the purpose of paying property tax and, in some states, an important document for establishing possession.
A khata (or its equivalent under different state naming conventions) is primarily a tax record confirming who is responsible for paying property tax on a given parcel — it is not conclusive proof of ownership by itself, but is still commonly checked as part of due diligence before a purchase.
Keeping this record updated in the current owner's name is one of the practical steps typically taken after buying property.
