Land Acquisition
The process by which the government compulsorily acquires private land for a public purpose, paying compensation to the affected owners.
Land acquisition law requires the government to follow a defined process — including a social impact assessment for larger acquisitions, notice to affected persons, and payment of compensation calculated according to statutory criteria — before taking over privately owned land.
Affected landowners have the right to challenge the acquisition process or the adequacy of compensation offered, through the mechanisms the law provides.
