Passport Impounding
The seizure or cancellation of a person's passport by the passport authority or a court, often in connection with a pending criminal case or as a bail condition.
Courts frequently direct surrender of a passport as a bail condition to reduce flight risk, and the Passport Authority can also independently impound a passport on specified grounds, including a pending criminal proceeding.
A person whose passport is impounded is generally entitled to a hearing and can challenge the action if they believe it was unjustified.
