Adoption
The legal process by which a person becomes the lawful parent of a child who is not their biological offspring, with all attendant rights and responsibilities.
Adoption law in India operates through more than one framework depending on the parties' religion and preference — including personal law adoption for Hindus and a religion-neutral route under child welfare legislation available to all, including for inter-country adoption.
Once validly completed, an adopted child generally has the same legal rights as a biological child, including rights of inheritance, in relation to the adoptive family.
