Advocate-Client Privilege
The legal protection ensuring that confidential communications between a client and their lawyer, made for the purpose of seeking legal advice, cannot generally be disclosed without the client's consent.
This privilege encourages clients to be fully candid with their lawyers, since it protects most communications made in the course of seeking or giving legal advice from being disclosed, including in court, without the client's consent.
The privilege belongs to the client, not the lawyer, meaning only the client can waive it — the lawyer cannot voluntarily disclose privileged communications even if they wanted to.
