Child Custody Law

Child Custody

The legal right and responsibility to care for and make decisions about a minor child, typically decided between separating or divorced parents.

Custody disputes are decided keeping the welfare of the child as the paramount consideration — not simply the rights or convenience of either parent — with courts weighing the child's age, emotional bonds, and stability of environment.

Custody can take different forms: physical custody with one parent and visitation for the other, or increasingly, shared/joint physical custody arrangements where circumstances allow.
