Domestic Violence Law

Domestic Violence

Physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, or economic abuse committed by a person against a woman in a domestic relationship with them.

The law defines domestic violence broadly — covering not just physical assault but verbal and emotional abuse, economic deprivation, and even harassment linked to unlawful dowry demands — and applies to relationships including marriage, live-in relationships, and family.

A woman facing domestic violence can seek protection orders, residence orders (the right to stay in the shared household), monetary relief, and custody orders, in addition to any criminal complaint she may file.
