Insurance Law
Insurance Surveyor
An independent professional appointed to assess and quantify the loss suffered in an insurance claim, whose report often significantly influences the insurer's settlement decision.
Surveyors are typically appointed for larger claims — property damage, vehicle accidents — to independently verify the extent of loss and provide the insurer with an assessment to guide the claim settlement amount.
A policyholder who disagrees with a surveyor's assessment can still challenge the insurer's final settlement decision before a consumer forum or the insurance ombudsman.
