Prenuptial Agreement
A contract entered into by a couple before marriage, setting out how assets, debts, and other matters would be handled if the marriage ends.
Prenuptial agreements are widely used in some countries but have limited direct enforceability in India — Indian matrimonial courts retain considerable discretion over maintenance and asset division regardless of what a prenup states, since personal law rights generally cannot be fully contracted away in advance.
That said, such agreements can still carry persuasive value as evidence of the parties' intentions and can be relevant in negotiated settlements.
