Quantum Meruit
A legal principle allowing a person to claim reasonable payment for work done or services rendered, even without a formal, complete contract covering that payment.
This remedy is used where a person has performed work genuinely expecting payment, and it would be unfair for the other party to retain the benefit without paying anything — the court awards a reasonable value for the work actually done, rather than a fixed contractual price.
It often comes up where a contract is found to be void, or where work continues beyond what an original contract clearly covered.
