Stridhan Recovery Suit

A civil suit filed by a woman to recover her streedhan — personal gifts and property — that was retained by her husband or in-laws after separation.

Because streedhan is the woman's absolute property, she can pursue its recovery through both a civil suit and, where the retention amounts to criminal misappropriation, a criminal complaint, giving her more than one avenue depending on the circumstances.

A detailed list of items given at the time of marriage, ideally documented, significantly strengthens such a claim.
