Copyright

The exclusive legal right granted to the creator of an original literary, artistic, musical, or other creative work to reproduce, distribute, and otherwise exploit it.

Copyright arises automatically once an original work is created and fixed in a tangible form, without requiring registration, though registration provides useful evidentiary proof of ownership and the date of creation in case of a later dispute.

Copyright generally lasts for the creator's lifetime plus a specified number of years thereafter, after which the work enters the public domain.
