Employee State Insurance (ESI)
A social security scheme providing medical care and cash benefits to employees earning below a specified wage limit, funded through employer and employee contributions.
ESI covers eligible employees for medical treatment, and provides cash benefits during sickness, maternity, and disability arising from employment injury, funded through contributions from both employer and employee.
Establishments covered under the ESI scheme must register and ensure timely contributions, and covered employees generally cannot separately claim certain benefits (like workmen's compensation) that overlap with what ESI already provides.
