Legal Aid Defence Counsel
A lawyer provided at state expense to an accused person who cannot afford private legal representation.
Every accused person has a constitutional right to be defended by a lawyer of their choice, and where they cannot afford one, courts and Legal Services Authorities are obligated to provide a legal aid lawyer, ensuring the right to a fair trial isn't dependent on financial means.
Legal aid defence counsel are drawn from a panel maintained by the relevant Legal Services Authority, and are expected to represent the accused with the same diligence as privately engaged counsel.
