Notice Period (Employment)
The period of advance notice an employee or employer must give before ending an employment relationship, as specified in the contract or applicable law.
Notice period requirements protect both sides — giving the employer time to find a replacement and the employee time to find alternate employment — and either party failing to serve the required notice can be liable to pay compensation in lieu of that notice.
The exact notice period is generally governed by the employment contract, subject to any statutory minimum applicable to certain categories of employees.
