Undertaking (Legal)
A formal, often written, promise made to a court or another party to do or refrain from doing a specific act.
Courts frequently accept an undertaking from a party — for instance, an undertaking not to alienate a disputed property — as a condition for granting or declining certain relief, and breaching a court-recorded undertaking can itself amount to contempt of court.
Undertakings given to a private party (outside court) also carry legal and, often, significant reputational consequences if broken.
