Affidavit
A written statement of facts, sworn or affirmed by the person making it before an authorised officer, used as evidence in court proceedings.
Affidavits are a common way of presenting evidence in court, particularly in interim applications, and the person swearing it (the deponent) can be held liable for perjury if it later turns out they made a knowingly false statement.
Many procedural applications require supporting affidavits verifying the facts stated, before the court will consider granting the relief sought.
