Caveat (Legal)
A formal notice filed in court by a person requesting that no order be passed in an anticipated case against them without first giving them a hearing.
Filing a caveat is a precautionary step, typically used when a person anticipates the other side may file a case (particularly seeking urgent interim relief) against them — it ensures the court gives the caveator notice and a chance to be heard before passing any order.
A caveat is generally valid for a limited period from the date it is filed, after which it lapses unless renewed.
