Attempt to Commit an Offence
An act done with the intention to commit a crime, which goes beyond mere preparation but falls short of completing the offence.
An "attempt" is punishable in its own right — the law doesn't require a crime to actually succeed for liability to arise, as long as the accused has moved past merely planning or preparing and taken a direct step toward committing the offence, intending to complete it.
Courts distinguish attempt from mere preparation by looking at how close the accused's conduct came to actually carrying out the intended crime.
