Attempt to Murder
An act done with the intention or knowledge required for murder, and in circumstances that, had death actually resulted, would have amounted to murder — but where the victim survives.
This offence is punished nearly as seriously as murder itself, since it is largely a matter of fortune (medical intervention, the victim's resilience) whether the intended fatal outcome actually occurs.
Courts closely examine the nature of the injury, the weapon used, and the circumstances to determine whether the requisite murderous intent was genuinely present.
