Bequest

A gift of property made through a will, to take effect after the death of the person making the will.

A bequest can be specific (a particular named item), general (a sum of money or a category of property), or residuary (whatever remains after other bequests), and precise drafting matters significantly to avoid ambiguity over what exactly was intended.

Bequests can lapse under certain circumstances, such as if the named beneficiary predeceases the testator, unless the will specifically provides for that situation.
