Executor of Will

The person named in a will responsible for carrying out its terms, including collecting the deceased's assets, paying debts, and distributing the estate to beneficiaries.

An executor's authority to act formally is generally confirmed through obtaining probate of the will, after which they are legally empowered to administer the estate strictly according to the will's terms.

A person named as executor can decline to take up the role, in which case the court can appoint someone else, often with the will annexed, to administer the estate instead.
