Intestate Succession
The distribution of a deceased person's property according to the default rules of law, applicable when they die without leaving a valid will.
When a person dies without a valid will, their property is distributed among their legal heirs according to the succession rules of their applicable personal law — which specify a clear order of priority among spouse, children, parents, and other relatives.
These default rules can sometimes lead to outcomes the deceased may not have intended, which is one of the main reasons estate planning through a will is generally recommended.
