Certiorari
A writ by which a higher court quashes an order or decision of a lower court, tribunal, or authority that acted without jurisdiction or unfairly.
Certiorari is used to challenge and set aside a decision already made by a subordinate court, tribunal, or quasi-judicial authority — typically on grounds that it acted beyond its jurisdiction, violated natural justice, or committed an error apparent on the face of the record.
It is a supervisory power the High Courts exercise over lower authorities, rather than a fresh appeal on the merits of the underlying dispute.
