Mandamus

A writ of mandamus is issued by a High Court or the Supreme Court to compel a government body, official, or public authority to carry out a duty imposed on it by law, when it has wrongfully failed or refused to do so.

It cannot be used to force an authority to act in a particular way where it has genuine discretion — only to make it actually exercise the duty it is legally bound to perform.
