Habeas Corpus
A writ directing that a person illegally detained be produced before the court and released if the detention is found unlawful.
Habeas corpus (Latin for "you shall have the body") is a constitutional remedy used when someone believes a person is being unlawfully detained — by police, a private party, or any authority — and asks the High Court or Supreme Court to have that person produced and, if the detention is illegal, set free.
It is one of the most direct protections against wrongful confinement, and courts typically treat such petitions with urgency given the liberty interest at stake.
