Public Interest Litigation (PIL)

A PIL allows any public-spirited person or organisation — not necessarily someone personally affected — to approach the court on issues affecting the public at large, such as environmental harm, government inaction, or violation of fundamental rights of a disadvantaged group.

Courts have used PILs to direct significant policy and enforcement changes over the years, though they also screen out petitions that are frivolous or filed for personal or publicity motives.
