Culpable Homicide
Causing death by an act done with the intention or knowledge that it is likely to cause death, but without the specific elements that make it murder.
Culpable homicide is the broader category covering unlawful killing, of which murder is treated as a more serious subset. It applies where a person causes death intending to cause death or a bodily injury likely to cause death, or with knowledge that their act is likely to cause death — but without the additional aggravating elements that elevate it to murder.
The distinction between the two, and the resulting difference in punishment, is one of the more nuanced areas of criminal law, turning closely on the facts of each case.
