Landlord / Tenant Law
Fixed-Term Tenancy
A tenancy created for a specific, defined period, automatically ending at the end of that term without requiring a separate notice to vacate.
Newer, more balanced tenancy laws in several states have moved toward fixed-term tenancies with clearer end dates, reducing the ambiguity and disputes that arose under older, open-ended tenancy structures.
Unless specifically renewed by mutual agreement, a fixed-term tenancy is generally expected to conclude, with the tenant vacating, at the end of the agreed period.
