A judicial officer at the first level of the criminal court hierarchy, handling investigation-stage matters and trying less serious offences.
Judicial Magistrates handle the day-to-day business of the criminal justice system in a district — remanding accused persons, granting bail in many cases, and trying offences within their sentencing powers, referring more serious matters up to the Sessions Court.
They function under the supervision of the Sessions Court and the High Court, and their orders can be challenged before those higher forums.
