Juvenile Justice

The specialised legal framework governing children in conflict with law and children needing care and protection, distinct from the ordinary criminal system.

Juvenile justice law treats persons below 18 differently from adult offenders — generally emphasising reform and rehabilitation over punishment, and routing cases through Juvenile Justice Boards rather than ordinary criminal courts.

In limited, serious circumstances, a juvenile aged 16-18 accused of a heinous offence can be tried as an adult, following a preliminary assessment of their mental and physical capacity by the Board.
