Locus Standi
The legal right or standing of a person to bring a particular case or challenge a particular action before a court.
A person generally needs to show they have a sufficient personal interest or connection to the matter to have locus standi to sue — though this requirement has been considerably relaxed for public interest litigation, where courts allow public-spirited persons to raise issues affecting the wider public.
A case can be dismissed at a preliminary stage if the court finds the person bringing it simply doesn't have standing to do so.
