Mehr (Dower)
An amount of money or property that a Muslim husband is obligated to pay or settle on his wife as part of the marriage contract.
Mehr is the wife's absolute right under the marriage contract, and can be structured as "prompt" (payable on demand) or "deferred" (payable on dissolution of marriage or death), depending on what the parties agree.
It remains payable regardless of the reason the marriage ends, and unpaid mehr is a debt the husband (or his estate) owes the wife, enforceable through the courts.
