Talaq
The general term for divorce initiated by a Muslim husband, historically taking several forms, some of which have since been altered by statute and judicial rulings.
Talaq traditionally covered several modes by which a husband could pronounce divorce, but Indian law has significantly reformed this area — instant "triple talaq" in a single sitting has been declared void and made a punishable offence, while other, more deliberative forms involving a waiting period remain recognised.
Muslim women also have well-established routes to seek divorce themselves, including through Khula (with the husband's consent) and judicial divorce on specified grounds.
