Nikah
The Islamic marriage contract, entered into between a Muslim man and woman with mutual consent, typically involving witnesses and a Mehr amount.
Nikah is treated in Muslim personal law as a civil contract rather than a sacrament, requiring free consent of both parties, witnesses, and an offer and acceptance, usually formalised in a Nikahnama (marriage document).
Because it is contractual in nature, Muslim personal law also provides specific, well-defined routes for dissolving the marriage, distinguishing it from some other personal law systems.
