Parole
Temporary release of a prisoner already serving a sentence, usually for a specific, limited purpose and period.
Parole allows a convicted person serving a jail sentence to be released temporarily — commonly to attend to a family emergency, illness, or similar personal circumstance — subject to conditions and after which they must return to complete their sentence.
It is distinct from "furlough," a periodic break granted as a matter of right after a certain portion of the sentence is served, without needing a specific emergency reason.
