Perjury
The offence of intentionally giving false evidence or making a false statement under oath in a judicial proceeding.
Perjury occurs when a person, having sworn or affirmed to tell the truth in a legal proceeding, deliberately makes a false statement or fabricates evidence, knowing it to be untrue.
Because the entire justice system depends on witnesses testifying truthfully, perjury is treated seriously and can itself result in a separate criminal prosecution, independent of the outcome of the original case.
