Probate
A court certificate confirming the validity of a will and the authority of the executor named in it to administer the deceased's estate.
Probate is the court process of formally proving a will is genuine and validly executed, after which the executor named in the will is legally empowered to collect the deceased's assets, pay off debts, and distribute the estate as the will directs.
Probate is compulsory in certain circumstances (such as wills made within specific major cities) and optional, though often still advisable, elsewhere.
