Section 156(3) Application
An application to a magistrate seeking a direction to police to register and investigate an FIR, used when police have refused to do so despite a cognizable offence being disclosed.
Where a police station declines to register an FIR, a complainant can approach the magistrate with this kind of application, and if satisfied a cognizable offence is disclosed, the magistrate can direct the police to register and investigate the matter.
This provides an important check against police inaction, ensuring genuine complaints of cognizable offences aren't simply ignored at the station level.
