Sessions Court
The trial court in each district that has jurisdiction to try serious criminal offences, including those punishable with death or life imprisonment.
The Sessions Court sits above the magistrate courts in a district and handles the more serious criminal trials — typically those a magistrate cannot itself impose adequate punishment for, such as murder, rape, and dacoity.
Cases generally reach the Sessions Court after being committed to it by a magistrate, once the magistrate concludes it involves an offence beyond their own sentencing powers.
