Stay Order
A court order temporarily halting the operation, enforcement, or further proceedings of a lower court order, or of a specific action, until the matter is finally decided.
A stay is often sought alongside an appeal or a challenge to an order — asking the higher court to pause the effect of the impugned order until it can be properly examined, so the appellant isn't irreversibly harmed while the appeal is pending.
Courts weigh factors such as the likely merits of the case and the harm each side would suffer, before deciding whether to grant a stay.
